British Accent and More: Armenian duo hopes to have a voice in Armenian music culture

Once the separate singers and university mates, now a family and a rock duo “Vo.X” Aram and Gaya Rian believe that they will manage to shape a new music style in Armenia . The performers of a Britpop genre, the musicians lived in Great Britain for six years and returned last year with two albums and the true intention to conquer the Yerevan music lovers.

“The music of Vo.X (‘voice’ in Latin) is brand new for Armenia, it is popular in the west, but there are no such performers in Yerevan,” says Aram Rian. “We are sure our music will find its niche in Armenia.”

The music of Beatles-like “Vo.X” had already gained success in Great Britain and it twice became the nominees of the British Gospel Music Award as the best British group in “gospel” genre. The songs “No matter” and “Gone with the wind” were broadcast by radio channels throughout Britain and the duo was hosted many times by the BBC channel.
“At first it was not easy to get used to Yerevan’s life after Britain,” says Gaya, “We have not found many of our friends who left just like us, but unlike us did not come back. At the beginning we have been missing the Yerevan we left but some time later we realized that in this new Yerevan there are new chances and opportunities.”

The first mutual work of musicians who in the 1990s were the pioneers of the Christian rock in Armenia was a rock drama “Passions of Cain” released in 1999 and having success among the Armenian artists.
The “Vo.X” music is about a human person, his joy and sorrow, love and freedom, friendship and loneless. As the musicians say they “call the things the way there are”.

The Vo.X” is a “family enterprise” since all work is shared between two talented artists. All compositions written, played, recorder, arranged, edited by them, from lyrics to orchestra arrangement, from vocal to keyboards, bass, drums. Aram, 30 a producer of “Vo.X” says he enjoys doing all the work though it distracts him from his main mission – writing music.

“We yet are not sure if we want to have another, a professional producer for our group. So far we don’t have any problem with promotion as the radio and TV stations are willingly broadcasting us free of charge,” says Aram.

In Yerevan it costs from $200 -$500 a month to show a video clip twice a day. From the one side the relatively low price allows Armenian artists to present their music, but such an affordable price also gives place for a huge amount of low-quality music to appear in national channels.
Aram and Gaya refrain from criticizing their colleagues, as Aram says Armenia still has to define whether it is West or East. “After all each person listens to the music close to his heart” Rian is the creative nick of the couple, (the name is a derivative of “Baghdasaryan)” but already an official last name for their daughter, four year old Rebecca- Jewel, who was born in London.

“We wanted to have a name to be easily spelled in any language and at the same time bearing our national identity,” explains Aram, meaning the ending ‘ian”.

The artists have already recorded several songs in Armenian language and soon are going to release a new CD. Several of their songs both in Armenian and English take the first lines in Armenian hit parades. One of such songs is a “Breeze” from the “Lifewise” album dedicated to the victims of the terrorist act in London’s subway in July 2005.
