STATE UNIVERSITY DEAN ASSASSINATED

YEREVAN, JULY 2, ARMENPRESS: Karen Mkrtchian, the Dean of Yerevan State University Russian Philology Department, was killed today morning by a shot in the head near a kindergarten in central Yerevan. The killer was reported to approach Mkrtchian, when he was coming out of the kindergarten where he had taken his son to, and shot him in the head. The killers fled in a white "Niva" car with foreign number plates, said Armenia's police press secretary confirming the fact of the murder.
Candidate of philological sciences Karen Mkrtchian was only 43. A graduate of the department of Russian philology, he was appointed Dean in 1999 after working there for already 18 years. He was the successor of his father, a well-known literary expert, Levon Mkrtchian, and also the first Rector of the Russian-Armenian State University of Yerevan.
One of the theories behind the murder examined by the police is that the killing could be related to some students that have flunked the exams recently.
Karen Mkrtchian was not engaged in any political or entrepreneurial activities, he was dedicated to the University, the Russian language and culture, his colleagues said.
