| A sage was reputed to grant any wish, so a farmer begs him to give him an "intelligent" donkey that won't need any beating to work. The sage delivers the animal but warns that the farmer has to be extremely nice and polite, as the donkey is very sensitive, to have his orders carried out. The farmer is very happy and the next day he politely asks the donkey to start work. But no matter how much he pleads and begs, the donkey refuses to budge. So the farmer calls for the sage, who, before very politely asking the donkey "to go to work" gives him a near death killing blow on its head with a big stick. The farmer is bewildered and ask to know why the donkey got hit when the sage expressedly demanded politeness. "You have to get its attention first so that the donkey listens", calmly replies the sage. Is it any different in the human world?? Most people need a good whack before they begin to understand anything. So next time.... |
