LAWMAKERS TO SETTLE 5,000-YEAR-OLD CONFLICT
......
* There's precedent for state lawmakers mucking around in foreign
affairs, especially those that happened a fairly long time ago. In
2000 (another non-budget year), lawmakers considered a bill to force
schools to teach students about the Armenian genocide, which is what
Armenian-Americans call the period 1915-1923. That's when the Ottoman
Turks rounded up 2 million ethnic Armenians, killed 1.5 million of
them and sent another 500,000 into exile.
Of course, Turkish-Americans don't see it that way, insisting that
the Armenians started a civil war by attacking their Turkish and
Kurdish neighbors, so the Turks were justified in striking back.
Nasty business all around -- so you might think the Wisconsin
Legislature would avoid taking sides. But there are more
Armenian-Americans than Turkish-Americans living in Wisconsin, so
you'd be wrong.
