Turkey renews invitation to Swiss FM for visit
DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan renewed an invitation, canceled last year, for Swiss
Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey to visit Turkey, Swiss President
Joseph Deiss said Saturday.
Deiss made the remarks at a press conference after meeting with
Erdogan, who is at the Swiss ski resort of Davos for the World
Economic Forum annual meeting which is currently on session until
Sunday.
During the "extensive talk," Deiss said, Erdogan renewed the
invitation which was canceled last year by the Turkish government in
protest of a Swiss parliament's vote, which recognized the 1915
genocide of Armenians by the Ottoman Turkish army.
Deiss said he and Calmy-Rey had briefed Erdogan details of the vote.
Deiss said the talk and renewed invitation seem to indicate an easing
of tensions between Switzerland and Turkey despite outstanding
questions between them. |
