Genocide recognition commission continues to work in Germany
20.01.2004 05:17
YEREVAN. (YERKIR). - On its way to Europe, Turkey cannot avoid recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, historian Tessa Hoffman, chairman of the 1915 Genocide Recognition Commission, said in her statement released Tuesday. The commission that was formed in Munich, has been registered in Yerevan as a non-governmental organization in 2003.
On April 13, 2000, the commission submitted an appeal to the German parliament requesting recognition of the Genocide of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.
In her statement, Hoffman mentioned that recognition of the Genocide is "not only another big contribution in preventing future genocides, but is also a condition for improving Armenian-Turkish relations." Hoffman conveyed hope that the German parliament's assistance would help to enhance the understanding between the nations. |
