Documentary about Armenians in Switzerland

In December 2003, under our conceptual and organisational supervision, an
independent group of young Swiss film professionals and journalists began
shooting a documentary about the lives of Armenians in Switzerland. On 16
December 2003 we went to Berne to talk to Armenians who had come to the Federal
Palace and Swiss politicians with an active interest in the issue about Switzerland’s
official recognition of the Armenian genocide.
In 2004, we would like to press on with the realisation of the film project.
Interviews are planned with Armenians ranging from the oldest generation
to the youngest descendants of the survivors of the massacre, in both German-
and French-speaking Switzerland.
Apart from addressing the effect of the Swiss Parliament’s official recognition
of the genocide, the documentary proposes to focus on the personal history
and present-day lives of Armenians in Switzerland, with particular regard
for their cultural self-image, their sense of identity between tradition
and assimilation, and current and historical relations between Switzerland
and the Armenians who live here.
We would like to follow these historical tracks by way of individual, remembered
and contemporary stories, and ultimately also enquire into the emotional
response of Armenians in Switzerland to Parliament’s decision of 16 December
2003 (official recognition of the genocide). But the diversity of cultural
life in the Armenian diaspora – for instance festivals, art by Armenian artists
and the youth scene – will also be shown. The Armenian Union in Switzerland,
its history and presence, will also play an important role in our documentary.
Although we are currently preparing comprehensive dossiers for submission
to the federal and cantonal grant-making bodies, our film project will under
all circumstances rely on private support as well.
